Met Council Helped Students Start the Year Off Right

IMG_3425This school year, Met Council helped students start the year off right. New school supplies are often cost prohibitive for many low income families. Met Council distributed more than 1,400 backpacks to families at Boro Park JCC, Canarsie JCC, Crown Heights JCC, JCC of Marine Park, JCC of Rockaway Peninsula, Queens JCC, JCC of Washington Heights-Inwood and Met Council’s crisis department and family violence department. Thanks to UJA-Federation of New York’s Supplies for Success, Jeffrey and Susan Goldstein, and an anonymous donor, Met Council provided students with quality supplies needed to succeed in the classroom.

In addition to providing funds for the backpacks and supplies, Supplies for Success enabled Met Council to increase its purchase power.  Supplies for Success is UJA-Federation of New York’s initiative to provide new school supplies for children in need.  Each year, UJA provides brand new filled backpacks to thousands of disadvantaged children.

A gift from an anonymous donor enabled Met Council to organize a back-to-school party with live music and dinner for families.  The party not only provided high quality backpacks and school supplies that our families otherwise would not have been able to afford, but also provided a fun and inclusive environment for them to celebrate the beginning of a new school year.

At the back to school party, one grateful mom said, I just wanted to again say thank you for inviting us to the party. It meant a lot more to us than you can imagine. My kids were all smiles on our way home.

Through the kindness of our outstanding donors and volunteers, students can hit the books with confidence this school year!
