In honor of Martin Luther King Day, volunteers joined Met Council to repaint the community room of The Linda & Jerome Spitzer Residence, our affordable senior housing on the Upper East Side. MLK Day is an annual national service day and designed to be “a day on, not a day off”. Each year, Americans across the country spend the day serving by providing solutions to some of our nation’s most urgent problems.
This year’s project was a huge success! The volunteers completed the entire room in only three hours. The community room is central to the residents. Every Sunday, Met Council volunteers serve lunch to the residents in the community room. The Senior Lunch Program ensures that our low income clients receive a hot, nutritional meal. It provides them with a social network of volunteers, as well as fosters a sense of community in the housing sites so that residents get to know their neighbors. The fresh coat of paint livens up the room that helps create a sense of community for the local residents.
