During the week of August 5th, 22 teenagers from Camp Tel Yehudah joined Met Council’s rebuilding efforts in Staten Island. The teens worked with our partner, non-profit, Feeding Family to help prepare a new community garden in the South Beach neighborhood, which was hit especially hard during Hurricane Sandy.
The volunteers worked hard weeding, removing garbage, clearing branches and spreading mulch in a former abandoned lot. Their work is the first step in creating new community gardens. This process is critical to absorbing toxins during floods and storms so the groundwater doesn’t get contaminated.
The garden will soon have individual plots available for free so that the community can have greater access to fresh food.
